Welcome to the Designing for Privacy course! Your teachers are Tobias Pulls and Leonardo Iwaya, with appearances by Simone Fischer-Hübner and Leonardo Martucci, and guest interviews by, among others, Amelia Andersdotter and Marit Hansen.

The course introduces the foundations of privacy, data protection, and privacy enhancing technologies, and focuses on the concepts of privacy by design and privacy impact assessments by exploring the relevant background, their relationship to the foundation and fundamental human rights, and by introducing relevant methods.

We've structured this course to be independent from the umbrella course Privacy by Design. If you're taking more than one of the "modules" (courses) part of the umbrella course you'll experience some overlap due to the inclusion of relevant background or interviews from other modules.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the course, students should be able to:

give an account of the concepts of privacy, data protection, privacy enhancing technologies, privacy by design, and privacy impact assessment,
relate privacy by design to privacy, data protection, privacy enhancing technologies, and fundamental human rights,
explain how privacy by design and privacy impact assessments are used.

The first learning outcome covers basic knowledge of topics covered throughout the entire course and its background. The second learning outcome is the focus of the second part of the course, on What Does it Mean to Design for "Privacy"?. Finally, the third learning outcome is introduced in the third and final part on Privacy and Data Protection Impact Assessments.
